In addition to other investment deals sealed at Forum On China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in China, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and China Engineering & Machinery Corporation (CMEC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the co-funding of the Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant (GIPP) Phase-1 Project.
NNPC Ltd.'s Executive Vice President, Gas Power & New Energy, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye and Chairman of CMEC Nigeria, Mr. Zhang Daguang, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies at the sideline of the forum.
The Abuja IPP, also known as the 350MW GIPP Phase 1 Project is one of the key anchor projects of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Project which is in line with Nigeria's Gas Master Plan infrastructure blueprint.
Upon completion, the GIPP Phase 1 Project is expected to improve power generation in the Nigerian Capital and beyond, create job opportunities through industrial sector driven regional development and increase revenue generation accruing to the federal government.
As part of the Nigerian government commitment towards global zero emission strategic alliance, the Abuja IPP Project is designed to reduce gas flaring which impact is tuned to devastating effect on greenhouse, and engender industrial development.
Other key critical Project Agreements signed by Nigeria and China include; the construction of the Brass Industrial Park, Gas Gathering Pipelines & Associated Facilities, and the Methanol Complex Project.
These ground breaking agreements were signed between Nigeria, Brass Fertilizer and Petrochemical Company Ltd. (BFPCL) and the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) of China.
Apart from laudable investment projects mentioned above, An Asian tech company giant Huawei Research lab has expressed commitment to establish a joint solar PV test lab in Nigeria as another Chinese firm has also pledged to establish an assembly plant for electric tricycles and to train Nigerians in technology and renewable energy development.
